INFORMATION, EDUCATION & COMMUNICATION MATERIALS

In the last 10 years, while working in different parts of the state,
Nalamdana keenly felt the absence of well produced training materials.
Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, although
mass produced by Government Departments, often do not find their
way to the intended audiences. With an exclusive grant from the Ford
Foundation, for the years 1999-2001, Nalamdana produces IEC materials
on HIV/AIDS, Maternal/ Child Health and a variety of other health and
social issues. These are used extensively in the field with different groups:
students, NGO staff, college trainers, health outreach workers, women's
groups and partnering organizations.

All Nalamdana's materials have been designed to be interactive,
provoking thought, action and discussion. For instance, a one hour
TV film Pesu Maname Pesu (Speak, O My Heart, Speak) had two
endings. Viewers were invited to write in and choose the one that
moved them the most. There was a flood of responses; a week
later there was a doctor on TV, answering questions on HIV/AIDS
and about the issues the film raised.

Nalamdana's materials are also suitable for an international,
especially Asian audience. World Vision, Myanmar, bought one
English jigsaw puzzle on HIV/AIDS. With permission to translate
it in the Myanmar language and to adapt the illustrations to suit
local styles of dress and features, this interactive jigsaw puzzle
has been used extensively in the field with considerable success.
Hindi and Marathi versions of these jigsaw puzzles have also been
successfully used in the field.
