"Are You Well"

"Are You Well" Art in the Hospital, Tambaram

Supported by Tamilnadu State
AIDS Control Society

Nalamdana's "Are You Well" Project at Tambaram, focuses on care and support for the patients of the Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, which is one of the largest public hospitals in Asia catering to both TB an HIV patients.

Under this project, Nalamdana offers brief role plays and longer evening plays on issues relevant to People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA). It has also developed "Thendral", a state of the art cable radio station offering seven and a half hours of programming daily, six days a week on the entertainment - education platform in Tambaram hospital's 18 TB and HIV wards and the OP area. Also weekly support group meetings are being conducted regularly for women on every Tuesday and Thursday. Nalamdana encourages and also involves PLWHA to participate in the role plays and radio programs.

2010

With support from TANSACS, we were able to continue the above stated components of this comprehensive project at the Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine from October to December 2010.

A total of six role plays and three full length dramas were completed during the month of October to mid December. About 1,100 patients and caregivers were reached through these performances. These performances highlighted issues on HIV awareness, mitigating stigma and dispelling myths and misconceptions; emphasizing drug adherence and inclusion of women in treatment access, familial and social issues faced by those affected by HIV.

In commemoration of the World AIDS Day, Nalamdana staged a special song on 1st December, 2010 at the World AIDS Day program organized by TANSACS on a grand scale at GHTM. The special song emphasized the importance of education and nutrition for the HIV infected and affected children. A request to TANSACS had been submitted to support this worthwhile project in the same scale for the upcoming months.

2009

Special Dissemination at Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine (GHTM), Tambaram, Chennai September 7, 2009

How does Art contribute to Anti-AIDS efforts?
Answering this question was a day long program at the GHTM (formerly the TB Sanatorium), Tambaram, hosted by the partners of Make Art/Stop Aids (MA/SA) read more about the day long program here >

At this program, New Concept Information Systems from Chennai presented the findings of their in depth evaluation of "Thendral", which they had conducted over 3 months.

The findings were very positive. Those patients who had been exposed to Nalamdana's programs, especially "Thendral" radio showed higher levels of understanding of their status, a more positive attitude, as well as greater adherence to their A.R.T., than those patients who had not received any exposure to Nalamdana's programs. Although it was known that the radio and plays were having a positive effect on the HIV patients, having actual tangible results from an external agencies evaluation, is an additional boost to Nalamdana's achievements.2009
