Goal Project - in partnership with
Naz Foundation, N.Delhi

GOAL is a Standard Chartered Bank, U.K. Initiative, which is executed by the Naz Foundation in New Delhi. It has been successfully running for 5 years in Delhi, and 2 years now, in Mumbai. Naz Foundation has partnered with Nalamdana to roll out this project in public schools and communities, in Chennai.

This project uses Netball (similar in many ways to basketball, but with restrictions for each player, so team play is crucial to being able to score) to empower girls from challenged backgrounds - local schools and communities. Girls are taught Netball alongside special sessions involving life skills. The entire curriculum spans ten months and covers four modules:
1. Be Yourself
2. Be Healthy
3. Be Empowered
4. Be Money Savvy
These modules cover self image, health and hygiene, communication and leadership skills, and financial literacy. Promising players are encouraged to perform and play for their dsitricts and maybe even on state or national teams.

Nalamdana launched the program at the Thoraipakkam Government High School, Thoraipakkam, Chennai, on January 8, 2010 and at the Avvai Home School, Adayar, Chennai, on January 26, 2010.

To coach the girls in the sport, Sunitha Suren (who represents the state of Tamil Nadu in national tournaments in both netball and basketball) has been hired. Her acheivements, physical height and confidence are a source of great inspiration for the girls.

From both schools together, over one hundred girls have enrolled for the ten month Goal curriculum.
