10 for 2010

Dear Friends of Nalamdana,
I am writing to tell you about an exciting campaign called "10 for 2010." As you know, Nalamdana works with limited funding and squeezes maximum benefit out of every dollar, pound or euro. As we look ahead at our plans for the next few years, there are 10 items we've put on our Wish List.

These are 10 things that are vital to the success of our organization, and we are hoping you can help us raise the money in 2010 to afford them. The complete Wish List, the cost of each item on the list, and the value of the item to Nalamdana and the community we serve are enumerated in a PDF file here >

A condensed "Wish List" is listed at the bottom of this page.

We hope you will pass on the word about our fund-raising efforts to your friends, family, and co-workers. You will find that the items on the list have a wide range, from a high-definition video camera to adapt our plays as short feature films to be shown for a minimal cost, to the sponsorship of a live village (drama) performance.

We are hoping one of the items on the list will have particular resonance with you, and that you would be willing to help us fund that item. You could also consider the option of cosponsoring an item as a group with friends or family members. We also encourage you to tell those in your social network about Nalamdana's work and the volunteer opportunities it offers.

Please reach out to me via email to let me know if you could personally support one item, or fund-raiser in your community to help sponsor one of our 10 "wishes." Your assistance will help ensure we reach many deserving children, mothers and families, some of whom are affected by HIV/TB or both.

Thank you for your support!
Nithya Balaji, Jeevanandham and the Nalamdana Team.

10 for 2010

1. Own vehicle. A hardy 4 wheel drive, like a Toyota Innova (We are using an old vehicle bought in 2002, while the Earthwatch project (2001 to 2006), was running. This vehicle is used for all urban and rural projects, and has clocked over 185,000 kms.! It needs frequent repairs and maintenance. A new vehicle is needed for the organization, and its projects)
Rs. 900,000 ($20,000 USD)
2. Ten Body microphones, to be worn by actors during outdoor performances, plus related equipment (Allows the actors to be heard in both spoken word and song without shouting or straining their voices. Enables more movement and theatricality throughout the production, without having to stage actors based on the location of standing mics. Easier for hospital patients, schoolchildren and village attendees to hear the important messages woven throughout Nalamdanda productions)
Rs. 150,000 ($3,400 USD)
3. Village Setting Performances. For example: HIV/AIDS, female infanticide, alcoholism. (Live performance in the village setting was the original vehicle for Nalamdana, blending entertainment and education. The average village performance draws a crowd of 800 attendees.)
Rs. 25,000 ($555 USD)
4. School Performances. For example: on sexual abuse, hygiene, child rights, etc. (Performing for young people is an investment in the life skills of the next generation. The average school performance draws a crowd of 500 children.)
Rs. 12,000 per show ($256 USD per show)
5. Co-fund a 5-day Theater Workshop. For example: a workshop for HIV+ Sex Workers. (Allows Nalamdana to go beyond performing and actually teach theater as a therapeutic skill. The attendees use their life experiences to write and then perform plays, encouraging both creativity and emotional processing.)
Rs. 25,000 for trainer's fees and materials alone ($534 USD for trainer's fees and materials alone)
6. Sponsor the printing of 1000 copies of Adolescent health flip-chart for classrooms (Nalamdana has developed a culturally-specific Tamil language guide to biology, puberty and reproductive health aimed at adolescents. The audience cannot be reached without a mass printing of the pamphlet to provide to schools. Adolescent and reproductive health is not taught in the majority of Indian schools and many children are left uneducated about their changing bodies. This pamphlet would be an aid to them and their teachers.)
Rs. 75,000 for 1,000 copies ($1,603 USD for 1,000 copies)
7. Artistic Patronage Stipend (All of Nalamdana's interactive training tools and fun materials are created by a committed core team of artists. Their creativity most often goes unrewarded, due to a lack of funds. This per diem will encourage one artist, per year, to pursue one great idea, and act as a bonus for work already done)
Rs. 50,000 per month ($1,111 USD per month)
8. School scholarship for the children of HIV+ women at the GHTM hospital
(Nalamdana currently educates and counsels HIV+ women at the GHTM hospital. Working closely with these women, Nalamdana recognizes that the future of their children is top priority for these women. Sending their children to school would ease the minds of the patients, improving their health and Nalamdana's ability to counsel and support them)
Rs. 5,000 per child, per year ($111 USD per child, per year)
9. Health insurance or medical reimbursement for staff/actors (The staff of Nalamdana are also the actors in the health plays. Multiple times a week they visit the TB ward at the government hospital. Multiple times a year they visit villages and slums. Providing them health insurance is vital. Often insurance covers only hospitalization and treatment. Hence Nalamdana may use part of the funds for medical reimbursement for certain identified staff members up to a predetermined limit.)
Rs. 100,000 to cover all FTE staff ($2,222 USD to cover all FTE staff)
10. In school screening of sexual abuse film, includes transport, LCD projector, staff time, discussion and counseling after the event. (Nalamdana is unique in its holistic attitude towards education. Although the sexual abuse play has been turned into a movie, it is still important to have staff members present to a lead follow-up discussion and provide counseling to individual students after the screening.)
Rs.15,000 per location ($333 USD per location)
